Cryptosporidium and Drinking Water

Cryptosporidium is a tiny parasite that reproduces and causes disease in both humans and animals. It can be found in water, especially public water systems and wells, that have been contaminated. Although rare, cryptosporidium has become known as the most common cause of waterborne disease and has been associated with large outbreaks of human illness in Canada. Although it is not common in Canada, these large outbreaks have happened in the past. In 2001 in Saskatchewan, an outbreak occurred and left over 7000 people sick. Most suffered with diarrhea, vomiting, and high fevers. These symptoms, as well as weight loss and stomach cramps are the most common and can last for weeks. The outbreak happened during routine maintenance of the city’s water chemical filter. This just goes to show how easy it is for cryptosporidium to accidentally contaminate our water, and how quickly it can get into our bodies without us knowing.

Cryptosporidium could enter your body by ingesting contaminated water and set up camp in your intestines. Most water sources in British Columbia are treated with chlorine, but cryptosporidium is resistant to chlorine and will survive though it. Cryptosporidium oocysts are rounded and measure 4.2 to 5.4 microns in diameter. You need to ensure you are using the correct cartridges to filter it out.  The filter cartridges should reduce particles as small as 4.2 microns.  The Lucid Water triple stage filtration system reduces particles as small as 0.5 micron in size, so it will filter out cryptosporidium.

When you install Lucid’s triple stage filtration system in your home or office, you are not only fuelling your body with mineral rich water, but you are also preventing any unhealthy and unsafe waterborne contamination from entering your body. Drinking clean, safe water is an easy way to keep yourself happy and healthy.
